We’re looking for an Indirect Tax Manager to join us and develop their career with a Fair Tax Mark accredited business. As part of our indirect tax team, you’ll build strong relationships with partners in different parts of the business across indirect taxes, and you’ll be responsible for helping make sure we meet all of Co-op’s indirect tax reporting and compliance requirements, as well as assisting on corporate development projects.

Reporting directly to the Senior Indirect Tax Manager within our wider in-house tax team, you’ll play a key role in the development of the Indirect Tax reporting and compliance function for Co-op and its subsidiaries, ensuring that all reporting and regulatory deadlines are met and finding opportunities to make our processes more efficient. What you’ll do
• Prepare, review and submit accurate and timely VAT and Plastic Packaging Tax (PPT) Returns, ensuring compliance with legislative requirements and internal standards
• Identify, prepare and support indirect tax claims and opportunities to optimise Co-ops tax position
• Manage HMRC enquiries, audits and information requests, as well as tax related queries from external auditors, ensuring timely, accurate and robust responses
• Support the provision of regular, robust and consistent tax forecasting process and prepare associated tax cashflow forecasts
• Provide proactive indirect tax advice and technical support to colleagues across the business, helping to ensure tax considerations are reflected in commercial and operational decisions
• Identify development and improvement opportunities within Co-op’s compliance and reporting processes, and work with wider Co-op teams, focusing on management of internal tax controls
• Carry out other work, including working with corporate development and ad-hoc tasks as required associated with the management of Co-op’s Corporation Tax requirements
• Coach and mentor junior staff, sharing knowledge, experience, and expertise in order to develop their abilities and behaviours
• Work closely with teams across the business to identify areas of tax risk and tax opportunities
What you’ll bring
We’re committed to making our roles as accessible as possible, so we only ask for the minimum criteria. To thrive here, you’ll need to bring:
• A CTA, ACA or equivalent qualification, with significant indirect tax experience, including VAT and Plastic Packaging Tax, with awareness of wider indirect tax regimes
• Strong understanding of complex VAT matters, including partial exemption, property, retail, and a proven ability in tax accounting and reporting requirements
• Strong understanding of tax risk management, internal controls and governance requirements
• An ability to extract, analyse, and interpret data and apply the appropriate tax treatment
• Awareness of the interaction between indirect taxes and other taxes, including Corporation tax and PAYE
• Demonstrable ability to assess tax risk, legislative developments and their commercial impact on the business
• The ability to self-motivate and plan and organise their own workload to manage competing priorities
• Strong communication and people skills, with the ability to build meaningful relationships with partners across the business
• Experience managing HMRC enquiries, audits and information requests, including preparation of technical responses
• An analytical approach, with the ability to manage and review work undertaken by others
• Strong analytical and systems skills, including advanced Excel and experience working with ERP systems, such as SAP.
