I found my calling in Co-op Funeralcare

Funeral Director, Manny Badyal, talks about changing careers and finding a family at Co-op Funeralcare.

After spending most of my life working in traditional Indian businesses, I decided to start looking for something different. I joined Co-op Funeralcare 5 years ago, and it’s like a second family away from home. Everyone has your back, and there’s a real sense of warmth I’ve not felt anywhere else.

A change of direction

I chose Co-op because they’ve always been a huge part of my life. My grandma worked in the old Co-op department store, and my Grandad’s funeral was held at Triumph Road Funeralcare, which is where I’m a Funeral Director today. Performing someone’s last rites is a real privilege, and I’ve not found a job that’s more rewarding. I like to think I’ve found my calling in life here.

Succeeding in a unique industry

As someone who came into the industry with no experience, I know that no amount of training can prepare you for what you see and learn. You need to be open-minded. No two days are ever the same and flexibility is crucial, but that’s what makes this role so rewarding.

When I first joined Co-op, I enrolled on a level 2 apprenticeship. Now that I’ve progressed into a Funeral Director role, I’m working towards my level 3. Stepping up made me realise how much more there was to learn about the funeral industry, and about myself. Co-op’s apprenticeship scheme is a fantastic opportunity to develop the skills you need to build a successful career in funeral care.
