Opening Doors, Lifting Others, and Shaping the Future: Women in Property at Co op

Discover how women across Co‑op Property are finding their voice, backing each other and shaping a more inclusive future for the industry.

We want to make sure everyone feels happy and supported to come to work, and that if we see inequality, we call it out and we’re brave enough to do that.

Rachael Evans |  Head of Risk, Health, Safety and Environment

At Co‑op, we believe that when women thrive, the whole industry rises. This year’s International Women’s Day theme, Give to Gain, reflects the culture we’re building across our Property teams: one where support, advocacy and shared learning help everyone move forward.

The spirit of bravery, curiosity and community shines through in the stories of women shaping their careers here at Co‑op.

Starting out, stepping up, and giving back: Megan’s story

When Megan Aspey joined Co‑op as a Construction Apprentice in 2021, she wasn’t sure where her career would take her. What she found was a team ready to open doors, and the encouragement to step through them.

From delivering a sustainability showcase refit to mentoring early‑career students, Megan has grown from apprentice to Assistant Construction Manager in just a few years. Her advice? “Be curious, ask questions, take opportunities, but don’t be afraid to set boundaries. Give to gain.”

A squiggly career built on courage: Dionne’s journey

Dionne Bestley’s path has taken her from a part‑time role in a Co‑op food store to Estates, Facilities, Utilities and now Consents Management. Her journey hasn’t been linear, and that’s exactly what’s made it powerful.

With the support of leaders, mentors and colleagues, she’s embraced stretch roles, built confidence and rediscovered her career ambitions after time away caring for her son. “Sometimes it’s the small things; reaching out, learning something new, that move your development forward.”

Property in her DNA: Rachel’s path to leadership

For Rachel Hargreaves, property has always been a passion. After 18 years in acquisitions and development, she joined Co‑op to take on a new challenge, and is helping to shape a culture where women’s voices are heard and valued.

She’s seen the industry evolve from being “the only woman in a room of 100 men” to a more diverse, inclusive space. Her message to women considering a career in Property: “Be brave. Don’t fear knock‑backs, they’re part of growth. You don’t need to be 100% qualified to go for a role. Lean into what excites you.”

Why inclusion matters

Zahoor Ahmad, our Head of Social Mobility, Inclusion and Belonging, reminded colleagues that confidence and visibility matter just as much as capability: “Lean into your strengths. Don’t hide your light. Others will apply for roles at 60% readiness, so don’t wait until you’re at 95%.”

He also highlighted the importance of networks, sponsorship and creating space for women to thrive in an industry where they’ve historically been underrepresented.

A place where women build careers, and each other up

Across every story, one thing is clear: Co‑op Property is a place where women can grow, be supported, and shape the future of the industry. Whether you’re starting out, switching paths or stepping into leadership, you’ll find colleagues who open doors, and celebrate you as you walk through them.

If you’re curious about a career in property, there’s never been a better time to explore what’s possible at Co‑op.
