Platform Engineer – Azure
£60,000 plus great benefits (Work Level 6A)
United Kingdom (Remote)

This is a UK remote-first role, with the option to work from our Manchester office if preferred. You may be occasionally asked to attend meetings, team events, and workshops in Manchester. We welcome applications from people who may need flexible working arrangements, and you’ll have the opportunity to discuss this during the interview and offer stages.

Please note: We’re unable to offer visa sponsorship for this opportunity.

About the role

We’re looking for a Platform Engineer to join our Digital technology & data team at Co-op. You’ll play a key role in building and maintaining the infrastructure that powers our food stores. You’ll work closely with agile, multi-disciplinary teams to deliver scalable, reliable solutions that help our store colleagues deliver great experiences to our customers and member-owners.

Our teams use a mix of IaaS and SaaS, and embrace infrastructure as code. You’ll work with tools like Terraform, Azure DevOps, and GitLab, and be part of a collaborative engineering team that values learning, sharing, and development.

Why this role matters

At Co-op, technology isn’t just about systems. It’s about people. In this role, you’ll help build the platforms that make our stores easier to run, so our colleagues can focus on what matters most: serving our customers and member-owners.

Whether it’s enabling smarter stock management or rolling our electronic shelf edge labels, your work will help transform how our stores operate. You’ll be part of a team that’s modernising retail in ways that are practical, impactful, and community-focussed.

What you’ll do

  • Build and support infrastructure for our websites and APIs
  • Translate technical needs into toolchains that support fast, iterative delivery
  • Design scalable, repeatable deployment strategies
  • Contribute to overall solution design
  • Share your expertise across our wider engineering community

What you’ll bring

  • Hands-on experience in platform engineering
  • Experience in agile/DevOps environments
  • Strong understanding of the web technology stack (networking, CDNs, HTTPS)
  • Adaptability and eagerness to learn new technologies
  • Good communication skills, with the ability to translate technical language for a non-technical audience
  • Good relationship-building and collaboration skills

We know some people may hesitate to apply if they don’t meet every requirement. At Co-op, we’re committed to building diverse and inclusive teams, so if you’re excited about this role but your experience doesn’t align perfectly, we still encourage you to apply.

Why Co-op?

At Co-op, we’re owned by our members. And because we’re owned by you, we can do right by you. So when you join us, you’re not just taking a job, you’re joining a movement. We’re an organisation that puts people and communities first, and we’re powered by purpose. We want this to be a place where you can thrive, so you’ll also receive:

  • An annual bonus (based on personal and business performance)
  • 28 days holiday (rising to 32 with service) plus bank holidays
  • A pension with up to 10% employer contributions
  • Access to a subsidised onsite gym (at our Manchester HQ)
  • 30% discount on Co-op products and 10% off other brands
  • Stream – early access to a percentage of your pay as you earn it
  • Virtual healthcare including GP appointments, mental health support, nutrition and fitness advice
  • 24/7 colleague support service
  • Training and support for your development and career progression
  • Cycle-to-work scheme

A place you’ll belong

We’re building diverse teams that reflect the communities we serve. We welcome applications from everyone, and our support centre is an inclusive environment where all our colleagues can thrive.

If you have a disability, we’ll make reasonable adjustments to support you through the recruitment process. We’re also proud to be part of the Disability Confident scheme - if you’re disabled and you meet the minimum criteria for this job, we’ll guarantee you an interview.
