Retail Safety Manager
£56,000 to £64,000 plus excellent benefits, including a company car (Work Level 5)
Field based, with occasional travel to our Manchester office to connect with your team

We’re looking for a Retail Safety Manager to make our food retail and logistics operations as safe as possible for our customers, consumers, and colleagues. From shaping operational risks policies around consumer protection  to leading investigations and advising senior leaders, you’ll play a big role in helping us to build a strong culture of safety across two of our biggest operational areas.

To keep our Co-op protected from legal, financial, and reputational risks, it’s essential that we’re always adhering to the latest food regulations and consumer protection, health, and safety practices. That’s where you come in.

What you’ll do

  • Provide clear and practical consumer protection, food safety, and health and safety advice to senior leaders
  • Develop, implement, and maintain policies and processes that are compliant with food regulations
  • Monitor and manage risks, interpreting and anticipating legislative changes and proactively addressing these
  • Deliver training and guidance to food retail and logistics teams, helping to make sure health and safety stays the top priority for everyone
  • Lead investigations into serious incidents, address these appropriately, and put preventative measures in place for future
  • Work closely with local authorities and regulators to understand the latest standards
  • Work with our Primary Authority to develop our Assured Advice model, and collaborate with the FSA as they develop future regulations
  • Use data and monitor trends to spot ways for us to improve how we work
  • Travel to stores and depots across the UK to support investigations or help deliver changes

What you’ll bring

We’re committed to making our roles as accessible as possible, so we only ask for the minimum criteria. To thrive here, you’ll need to bring:

  • Significant experience in an Environmental Health role (e.g., Environmental Health Officer)
  • Significant experience acting as a Primary Authority lead in a retail or multi-site environment
  • A relevant environmental health qualification (e.g., CIEH Environmental Health)
  • Strong knowledge of relevant UK food legislation and compliance standards
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Good communication skills, with the ability to influence people at all levels of seniority
  • The ability to deliver training and coaching to operational teams
