Customer Team Leader at Co op – Danielle’s Story

Danielle is a Customer Team Leader at Co op, balancing her role with university studies in Manchester. Here, she shares what it’s like to grow into leadership while studying.

When people think about Co-op, they might not realise just how diverse the business is. With so many different business areas there are plenty of career paths to choose.

Danielle | Customer Team Leader

Danielle, how did you first get started at Co op?

“I started working for Co op during a summer break from university, as a Customer Team Member in my hometown of Blackpool. When I moved to Manchester for my course, I was able to transfer to another store and keep going. I’d been interested in stepping up into a leadership role for a while. When my manager told me about a Team Leader opportunity, I went for it, and I was really happy to be successful.”

How have you managed to balance being a Team Leader with university?

"For me, it’s all about flexibility. During term time I work in Manchester, and then I go back to my home store in Blackpool during holidays.  It means I can focus on my studies when I need to, but still keep building experience at the same time.”

What does your role as a Customer Team Leader involve day to day?

“It’s quite a varied role, which is one of the things I enjoy most. You’re supporting the team, helping customers, and making sure everything runs smoothly in store.  A big part of it is leading by example, being there for your colleagues, getting involved on the shop floor, and stepping up when things get busy. I also spend time making sure the shelves are well stocked and the store looks its best."

What skills have helped you succeed in the role?

“You don’t need to have had a leadership role before, which I think surprises people. For me, it’s more about being organised and being good with people.  The training really helps you grow into the role, so as long as you’re willing to learn and take on responsibility, you can build your confidence as you go.”

What’s it really like working at Co op?

“It can be fast-paced, especially in a busy student area, but that’s part of what makes it enjoyable. There’s always something to do and the team really supports each other.  One of the things I value most is what Co op stands for. Through my studies, I’ve learned about ethics and sustainability, and it’s great to see those values in action, whether that’s fair trade, recycling, or supporting the local community.”

What are your future career plans?

“I’m still figuring out exactly what I want to do after university, but I know I want to use my degree and keep developing.  With so many different areas in Co op, there are lots of directions I could go in, like HR or commercial roles, so it’s exciting to have those options.”
