Life as a Food Technology Degree Apprentice at Co-op – Eddy’s story

Eddy, our Food Technology Apprentice, shares some of his favourite moments and experiences since joining Co-op - from collaborating with global suppliers to taking part in an unforgettable research trip to Turin.

My apprenticeship gives me the best of both worlds. I spend one day each week studying towards my qualification through Sheffield Hallam University, and the rest of my time getting stuck into more hands-on projects at Co-op.

What is your role, and what does a typical week look like?

I'm a Food Technology Degree Apprentice at Co-op, which means I split my time between studying and working. I spend one day a week with Sheffield Hallam University, and the rest getting stuck into projects at Co-op. I really enjoy that mix, as it means I can learn something new and then actually put it into practice straight away.

What were you doing before, and why did you choose this apprenticeship?

I've always been passionate about food and sustainability, which led me to become a chef after university. Over time, I realised I wanted to explore food technology more, but I struggled to find opportunities that fit my experience. This apprenticeship felt like the perfect way to take that next step and build a career in the industry.

What kind of things have you worked on so far?

I've had the chance to work on some really interesting things already. One of my favourites was a university project looking at the sustainability of Chilean wine production. Alongside that, I've been involved with projects at Co-op that help me understand how things work in the real world.

What opportunities have you had since joining Co-op?

There have been loads of opportunities in a short space of time. I've achieved my WSET Level 2 qualification, worked with global suppliers, and even travelled to Turin to learn more about vermouth production. I've also volunteered with FareShare, which gave me a real insight into the impact Co-op has on local communities.

How has Co-op supported your development?

I've learned so much since joining. Being surrounded by experienced people and getting involved in real work has helped me build my confidence and knowledge at the same time. It's been a great environment to grow in, especially while working towards my degree.

What's something people might not expect about this role?

I think people might be surprised by how varied it is. One minute you're studying, the next you're working with suppliers or getting involved with something completely new. It's a lot more hands-on and wide-ranging than I expected when I started.

What would you say to someone considering this apprenticeship?

I'd definitely say go for it. It's such a good way to learn, develop and start building your career. I feel really grateful for everything I've experienced so far, and I'm excited to see where it takes me next.
