We’re looking for a Software Engineer to join us and transform how we design, build, and operate our next generation food stores inventory system. Inventory is a core part of our food stores and monitors the products delivered, their in-store location, and when they’re sold.
At Co-op, collaboration is part of who we are. Our team works in Scrum, using Jira for ticket management and Azure DevOps as our repository and pipeline platform, and plan to migrate to Gitlab later this year. We’ll provide you with career and technical coaching, and we run communities of practice to support our colleagues’ learning and development. In this role, you’ll work alongside your team to build our full food store inventory system – including the frontend, backend, platform, and data storage.
What you’ll do
- Work collaboratively to build, maintain, and support our new food store inventory system launching later this year
- Develop software iteratively and up to a high standard
- Share your knowledge and experiences with colleagues as part of our Engineering communities of practice sessions
- Resolve technical challenges, making sure that solutions fulfil our business objectives
This role would suit people who have
- Experience in a hands-on Software Engineering role, implementing and maintaining applications and services
- Experiences of tooling and practices for automated build, integration, and deployment, as well as delivering iteratively towards an end goal
- Good programming skills in React/Node and TypeScript, and an exposure to test automation using tools such as Jest and Playwright
- Knowledge of Azure, or transferrable knowledge from similar Cloud platforms (e.g. services including
- Function Apps, App Services, Service Buses, and CosmosDB)
- Good collaboration skills, with the ability to work in pairs and/or ensembles and with TDD

At Co-op, we're committed to building a diverse and inclusive working environment, so if you'd like to apply for this role but your experience doesn't quite meet every point, we'd still encourage you to apply. You may be just the right candidate for the job or other roles we have available.
Why Co-op?
If you’ve got the skills and experience we’re looking for, we can offer you a competitive salary and great benefits package which includes 30% off Co-op branded products in our food stores (as well as other discounts on Co-op products and services). You’ll also get:
- An annual bonus (based on personal and business performance)
- 28 days holiday (rising to 32 in line with service) plus bank holidays
- A pension with up to 10% employer contributions
- Access to a subsidised onsite gym (at our Manchester HQ)
- Coaching and training to support your career development
