As an organisation that prides itself on its ethics, fairness and having a sound moral code, we need an impeccable Audit & Risk function to make sure our actions are always as good as our intentions, and that everything is compliant and working as it should. So, we value Audit & Risk highly and invest in it heavily. It works in a 3-lines of defence model and we understand the value it plays in our future and make sure it’s at the heart of everything we do.
This independent function is empowered to work with lots of different areas, across the business, in order to identify any issues, and help improve them. Checking to see how risks are being managed, and then giving assurances on them, roles here are incredibly exciting and varied. For example, one day you could be auditing information security, the next, expenses. It really is anything but “just finance”.
Risk is split into two functions – Field Operations and the Enterprise Risk Engagement Framework (EREF). EREF are office-based and focus on interpreting government policies and translating them into rules and regulations for the Co-op to follow, forming the Risk Management Framework. You'll be able to work across Business Continuity, Data Protection, MI and Group Transport (looking after the fleet of vehicles that deliver food).
Once the EREF agree these rules and regulations, it’s the Risk Managers in the Field Operations team who then go out into branches to make sure everyone is following them. Unlike other commercial organisations, Risk roles here are multi-skilled, rather than specialist, and can therefore offer more exciting and varied career challenges. And, this is just one of the many reasons why, when people join us in this area, they like it so much that they tend to stay.
