This is a UK remote first role, with an option to work from our Manchester office for those who want to. You may be asked to occasionally attend meetings in Manchester (find out more about our hybrid working policy at colleagues.coop.co.uk/hybrid-working-policy).

Please be aware Co-op does not offer visa sponsorship for this role

We’re looking for a Front-End Engineer to join us in Digital Technology & Data at Co-op. You’ll collaborate with a community of Quality Coaches, Front-End, Software, and Platform Engineers to create products, services, and platforms that benefit our member-owners and communities. As part of our ‘OneWeb’ team, you’ll focus on designing and building user-friendly and accessible web platforms. There’ll also be opportunities for you to work on the back-end, giving you a chance to be involved in a variety of exciting projects.

At Co-op, collaboration is part of who we are, and we work in small, multi-disciplinary, and agile teams; often using pair and ensemble programming. We’ll provide you with career and technical coaching to support your learning and development, and we run communities of practice to promote knowledge-sharing across our teams.

What you’ll do

  • Work collaboratively to build, maintain, and support Co-op applications and systems
  • Develop software iteratively and to a high standard
  • Help improve our front-end framework and design system
  • Continuously enhance the performance, accessibility, and UX of our live services
  • Use modern engineering practices like TDD, pair and/or mob programming, and continuous deployment
  • Work alongside our design colleagues to create a great user experience
  • Share your knowledge and experience with colleagues

This role would suit people who have

  • Significant experience building effective and accessible front-end applications
  • A solid understanding of web accessibility standards and the ability to spot issues for screen reader and keyboard users
  • Experience writing modern HTML, CSS (including pre-processors like Post CSS or Sass), ES6+, and JavaScript/TypeScript
  • Experience using JavaScript frameworks (e.g., React, Vue.js etc.)
  • Some experience with design tools like Figma, Sketch, or Illustrator
  • A good understanding of version controls and branching models
  • Good communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to translate complex language for a non-technical audience

We know that some candidates are less likely to apply for a role if they don’t meet all the criteria in the job description. At Co-op, we're committed to building a diverse and inclusive working environment, so if you'd like to apply for this role but your experience doesn't quite meet every point, we'd still encourage you to apply. You may be just the right candidate for the job or other roles we have available.

We’re open to applications from people who may require flexible working arrangements. There’ll be an opportunity to discuss your flexible working requirements during the interview process, and at offer stage.

Why Co-op?

If you’ve got the skills and experience we’re looking for, we can offer you a competitive salary and great benefits package which includes 30% off Co-op branded products in our food stores (as well as other discounts on Co-op products and services). You’ll also get:

  • An annual bonus (based on personal and business performance)
  • 28 days holiday (rising to 32 with service) plus bank holidays
  • A pension with up to 10% employer contributions
  • Access to a subsidised onsite gym (at our Manchester HQ)
  • Coaching and training to support your career development
  • Wagestream – a money management app that gives you access to a percentage of your pay as you earn it
  • Grocery Aid – 24/7 access to a range of emotional, financial, and practical support services for you and your family
