It’s cool to care
Before I joined Co-op, I was a registered manager looking after a team of people providing care for the elderly, and I’d worked in Health and Social Care for 10 years. Care work can be difficult, and I faced plenty of challenges during my time in the industry. But caring for people has always been something I’ve been passionate about, and a career change wasn’t something I saw on the horizon. Events from the previous year were to change that.
A blessing in disguise
My husband had been made redundant and after spending some time searching for a new job, to our surprise, he found the perfect role in a place we never expected, Scotland’s Shetland Isles. We decided to spend some time out there, and we immediately fell in love. That’s when my own job hunt started. I wanted to find a role that lived up to my values, and I was determined to work for an organisation that did some good in the world. I found several roles during my search, but Co-op stood out the most with its mission of co-operating for a fairer world and seeing first hand the good work they had done in my local community in South Lanarkshire, I decided to apply for the Customer Team Leader role being advertised in Brae.
Joining the team
The whole recruitment process was amazing, and I quickly discovered that Co-op was a different kind of business. My husband and I had some trouble moving homes, but my manager Chris was so helpful and supportive. I hadn’t even started and already I was feeling appreciated and part of the team. When we finally arrived and got settled in the Shetlands, it felt like we’d made the move we always needed.
Living the dream
I’m still learning the ropes, but the support from the team here is second-to-none, and there’s always a helping hand nearby if I need it. The best part is the flexibility I’ve got with my hours. Having the morning free before I head into work is a huge plus, and I love being able to spend time with my dogs. I’m also looking into Co-op’s Boost programme, a training programme designed to help colleagues with career progression as I’d love to become a Store Manager one day. I feel like I’ve now settled into a great community and look forward to my future with Co-op.
