Helping me through the anxiety of lockdown 

I joined the Co-op as a temporary Team Leader during the pandemic after losing my job as a Pub Manager. Like many others, I was facing the anxiety of the uncertain situation I found myself in. I saw the job online and applied, it was a quick process, and when I received my job offer, I felt like a weight had been lifted from my mindCo-op has really helped me through the anxiety of lockdown. 

Learning a new role 

My first day as a Team Leader was a learning curve, but I was introduced to everyone, and got to shadow members of the team. The main challenge for me during this time was managing the safety of our customers and colleagues when they were in the shop. The social distancing and use of masks and PPE equipment was well communicated by the store management team. My previous experience of working in retail and the pub industry, and the customer service skills I’d developed in those roles, all proved helpful when I started the job. 

Building a new career 

Since my temporary team leader contract ended, I’ve passed an interview for a permanent Store Manager position in the Steyning store and I’m currently completing my training. I love the team atmosphere in the store, and the ethos of the Co-op. The company is focused on supporting local communities, and Ive found this approach so refreshing and welcoming. After just 3 months of employment, I truly feel like one of the team and I’m already on my way to on building an exciting new career within the Co-op.
