Just north of the M25, our biggest-ever depot is starting to take shape. After a year of hard work on the ground, we’ve finally reached the next milestone of our Biggleswade build.
Laying big plans
It’s taken about a year to complete the outside of our brand-new depot, and it’ll take the best part of 2021 to fully kit the building out. By January 2022 we’ll have transformed all 660,000 square feet into Co-op’s largest regional distribution centre, handling over 2 million cases of frozen, fresh and ambient products a week.
Our Biggleswade depot is a complicated project, and we’ve faced plenty of challenges and delays along the way. After the arrival of Covid-19, it became more and more difficult for our team to keep on top of supplies and social distancing. And later in the year, the steady summer rain kept our concrete workers from getting up to speed. With colleagues isolating and teams not travelling as much, we had to develop new ways of working as quick as we could. But thanks to some brilliant teamwork and the help of our developer and contractor, we’ve been able to work through any issues without too much fuss. .
Building a bright future
Not only will our new Biggleswade depot be one of the greenest depots in the country and run entirely on renewable electricity, we’re completely committed to creating a state-of-the-art working environment focussed on colleague wellbeing. We’ll be recruiting over 1,000 new colleagues and we want our new depot to be a place they’re proud of. We’ve appointed the Depot General Manager, and we’ve already started recruiting for other senior management roles within the depot too.
What comes next?
Biggleswade is the perfect location to help us boost our growth throughout London, the South, and South East. The new site is just one part of our ambition to make sure we've got all the right distribution facilities in all the right places. When we achieve our goals, we’ll be able to deliver improved service and availability to all our retail stores, franchises, and wholesale partner sites across the country. It’s a really exciting project, and we can’t wait to watch this huge, empty shell turn into an amazing Co-op depot.
