Back in the day
I’ve worked at Co-op for 15 years, and I’ve changed careers a couple of times. I started off as a customer team member, stacking shelves and rotating stock, and then I started working at newly refurbished stores and helping new teams. Shortly after that, I was offered a team leader position, and I moved stores again to climb the ladder. After spending 10 years in retail, I had no idea my life was about to change. All of a sudden, my store was closing, and I was facing redundancy.
A leap of faith
When I was working as a team leader, I was close to Co-op’s Newhouse depot in Motherwell. I remember seeing a transport support assistant role being advertised, so I decided to apply. That’s when my Logistics career began. I was inexperienced and completely new to the role at the time. I knew nothing about depots, fleets or HGV’s, and I had a lot to learn before settling in. Co-op did a great job of training me up, and just 1 year into the role, I applied for Co-op’s team manager apprenticeship scheme. I was given the opportunity to help run the night shift operation at Dalcross depot, and I quickly learned the ins and outs of the job.
Owning a new career
In 2019, I began working as a transport co-ordinator at Newhouse depot, managing deliveries throughout the Scottish Highlands and islands. The role gave me lots of freedom, and I’ve been heavily involved in some exciting projects across the region. I’ve come on leaps and bounds as a manager, so when Co-op announced its brand-new Biggleswade depot, I knew my unique career experience could make a real difference there. An opening appeared in the integration support team, so I decided to apply.
New challenges and next steps
When it comes to my career, I like challenging myself and doing things outside my role to help me learn and grow. Working in different positions and different locations has given me the confidence to try things outside my comfort zone, and I think that’s helped me get to where I am today. I’m really looking forward joining the Biggleswade start-up team, and I can’t wait to get started.
