I’ve been a Warehouse Operative here at our Birtley depot for the last two years. I really enjoy my job and love working for Co-op. It’s given me lots of opportunities to get involved and support local charities – something I’m truly passionate about.
Supporting great causes
Feeding Families is a national charity that gives food hampers to families struggling over Christmas. I saw they were asking for support and jumped at the chance to get involved. My colleagues in the depot and I arranged for eight cages of food to be donated, which was fantastic! And when I won a Yammer competition, I used my £50 Co-op voucher prize to contribute more.
Giving back to the community
Christmas can be an expensive time and many families have financial worries, so being able to give Christmas meals was such a rewarding opportunity. My wife and I helped Feeding Families make and deliver 3,000 hampers to families around the Durham area. On top of the voluntary work over Christmas, I kept busy during the COVID-19 pandemic by donating food and hampers to other local charities. I also have elderly neighbours who've been shielding, so I sometimes do their shopping for them too. At the very least I make sure to say ‘hello!’ from a safe distance.
What it means to be logistics colleague of the year
It’s been a strange year for everyone, so I was delighted to win the 2020 #BeingCoop Logistics Colleague of the Year award. It’s great that outside my day-to-day warehouse role, Co-op gives me the opportunity to support local causes that mean so much to me and my family.
